You walked in again
like a bat out of hell.
You don't know who you are
or what you've done tonight.
I'm screaming, "Not again."
You're passed out on the floor.
Dad's calling 911
and I am scared as hell.
This can't end like last time.
You always let me down.
God save us from this tragic story.
Can't you see
that you're not a big person?
You've pushed all your problems on me.
And I didn't ever really mind,
but I'm growing up
and it's getting old.
I can see you have no self-esteem,
but there's no comfort in the drink.
God save us from this tragic story.
I was born of a sinner
and I am one, too.
Only with grace and love
have I made it through
this hell-hole of life
with snakes at my feet
biting ankles with poison
'til I cannot breathe.
This life
is never gonna get easy.
This life
is never gonna get easy.
Find hope
in the One who frees me.

Stay gold, Ponyboy. Stay gold.
Backtrack to the church parking lot where all of this was born:
a bunch of nerdy kids who swore that they would get the girl.
Well, they tried everything
from sports to playing bass,
but soon they got lost in the sound.
We're in the shark tank.
Stick tight with all your friends.
Deep breathe before the plunge,
just remember where you came from.
The bond we share is snack and jokes and always staying young,
circle pits and getting sick from eating too much pizza.
So raise your hands up high.
Make a fist and punch the sky.
Surf up to the front to grab the mic and sing with us.
Tried and true,
won't be moved:
misfit youth with nothing to prove.
We're the kids who don't belong.
We're in the shark tank.
Stick tight with all your friends.
Deep breathe before the plunge,
just remember where you came from.
Stay gold, Ponyboy. Stay gold.
Let's never grow up.
Head up, fists tight, stay true, keep sight.
Let's never grow old.

The phone is ringing.
It's half past four in the morning,
and she hasn't slept in days.
Says she's haunted by bad dreams and memories
from the scars that you have made.
She says she doesn't know what to do,
but you're on your last strike.
I'd have called you out five swing ago.
Don't you dare say:
"I'm sorry, dude.
This time it's different.
I don't know what I was thinking."
We've heard it all before
and it's tired.
Dude, this ends tonight.
You had the chance to make things right,
but now you've crossed the line
and we won't let this injustice stand.
We'll fight.
You said that this meant something to you.
You said that our bond was strong.
You said that we needed to trust you,
but the hope of that trust lies with the sister you wronged.

Late at night in a suburb of LA
I arrive to a house that's already sleeping.
They said they'd try to wait up,
but Kyle's got work at six.
I lay on the couch
the Lai's got when we were ten,
curled on my old spot,
but now I'm too tall to fit.
These days, everything feels different.
These days, everything feels just the same.
I can't escape the fact that this shifting life is the norm.
Three years have passed since
we sang about staying gold,
and Houston's calling.
Time to go back to the road that goes ever on.
(Get your facts straight. I'm never coming back.)
This voice in my head
says that all hope is gone.
I became what I hated.
I sold out my songs,
but I check my cell phone
for the missed calls and texts
and the screen shows up blank
'cause I'm finally home again.
It's dangerous business walking out your front door.
If you don't keep your feet, then who knows where you'll go?
We wrote all these lyrics as something of a map
to hold fast to the Good and stick tight with our friends.
And those lines are still true:
I'll still never grow old.
I still know where I'm going.
I still know where I came from.
